Guwanyi
SHEET / 04ABOUTMISSION ACTIVE

Genuine Indigenous leadership in Australian technology.

Guwanyi exists to create genuine pathways for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in technology. This is not a marketing position — it is the reason the business was founded. The technology sector employs over 900,000 Australians, with a government target to reach 1.2 million by 2030. Indigenous Australians remain dramatically underrepresented in this workforce, and Guwanyi was founded to change that.

The Australian Government’s Indigenous Procurement Policy directs a rising share of Commonwealth contract value — from 3% in 2025–26 to 4% by 2030 — toward Indigenous businesses, with new rules from July 2026 requiring at least 51% First Nations ownership and control. Beyond government, more than 3,000 organisations operate Reconciliation Action Plans, with major corporates pledging billions to Indigenous suppliers. Most of that spend currently goes to construction, facilities management, and labour hire. Technology services — where contract values are high and expertise is scarce — is structurally underserved.

Guwanyi was built to be different from the typical Indigenous procurement arrangement. Rather than acting as a compliance vehicle for larger firms, Guwanyi operates as the prime contractor and account leader, partnering with established delivery organisations who provide platform capability and scale. The Indigenous ownership is genuine, the technical leadership is deep, and every engagement creates real Indigenous employment and skills outcomes — by design, not as an afterthought.

Practical mechanisms back the mission. Remote-first technology roles allow Indigenous professionals to remain in community while building careers. Trainee and graduate pathways are embedded within delivery projects, providing real-world experience alongside formal training. Senior partners and delivery organisations mentor those pathways. Over time, Guwanyi creates a visible pipeline of Indigenous success in technology — the role models that change what is possible for the next generation.
